Easily the most underrated PJ Harvey album. I love the rawness of her early work, the uniqueness of Let England Shake and quirkiness of alternative oriented albums, but there's another (often forgotten) classic in the bunch. White Chalk is PJ totally nailing the simplistic, stripped-back piano, acoustic and symphonic pop sound. It's the most vulnerable she's ever sounded. [First added to this chart: 06/06/2020]

If Neil Young at his peak had modern production, and The Crazy Horse tried playing everything from Americana, indie folk and country to classic 70s folk rock. This album feels like a new century's answer to On The Beach, where folk rock refuses to use by-the-book approach full of cliches and instead subverts all expectations. But of course, the highlight is Jason Molina's impeccable songwriting talent, which brings all of those genres together as cohesively as it's possible, without a dull note in the mix. The album that exposed me to extreme metal. First listen, I didn't manage to pass the 1 minute mark. "Screams, ugh. That's not for me." But that minute was so intriguing that I couldn't get it out of my head. I basically challenged myself (maybe for the first time ever) to listen to something that's outside of my comfort zone. And needless to say, I haven't stopped listening to it ever since. It's fair to say that this one changed the way I think about music, and it encouraged me to immerse myself in a lot of different genres, mainly metal, hip hop, electronic and ambient at the time. My Arms Your Hearse or Morningrise may be even better, but I'd pick Blackwater Park as Opeth's crowning achievement, if nothing else then for its importance in my musical education. Yes, Lightbulb Sun is my favourite Porcupine Tree album. Fight me. It's the most varied and enthralling collection of songs they've ever put together (counting Steven's solo career too). The title track is a perfect alternative/prog rock song, Russia On Ice is an underrated epic, Last Chance... one of the most interesting songs they've ever recorded and so on. Every song is a winner. Feels. I've always loved The Glow Pt. 2, but only recently came to the conclusion that it deserves to be this high on my charts. Drones, folk, indie, noise, ambient... There's not much that Phil couldn't do at this point in his career. Mount Eerie is just as good and people should generally dig deeper into Phil's discography, there are a lot of gems. Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 2% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 90.7/100, a mean average of 94.1/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 93.5/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 6.2.

I absolutely LOVE 2000s underground hip hop scene. There's a lot more that I feel you havent heard yet either but MF DOOM, Aesop Rock and Deltron 3030 are a great start.

Here's some suggestions of other artists that had some critically acclaimed records at that time:
Cunninlynguists, Masta Ace, Atmosphere, J Dilla, Murs & Living Legends, Brother Ali

I don't see anything wrong with having a metal-heavy chart if that's the music you loved from the decade. Nice to see some excellent selections from other genres here too, and nice to see some undeniably great entries such as Arcade Fire's Funeral honored here. Great job!

Thanks man! I should probably cut some metal picks. I have 23 of them which is really too much, but I’m not sure which ones to drop...
