Produced by Billy Bragg and Wilco. The second in a series of albums with lyrics written by the legendary Woody Guthrie, Bragg and Wilco continue the great revival of Guthrie's work they started with Volume 1. This edition is a bit darker, which is what makes it so endearing. It's still just as much fun, with Natalie Merchant singing "I Was Born" and the timelessness of songs like "Joe DiMaggio's Done It Again" and "Airline To Heaven". Bragg and Wilco, it turns out, work exceptionally well together. [First added to this chart: 12/04/2011]

2000 – E-SQUARED
Produced By STEVE EARLE & RAY KENNEDY

1. Transcendental Blues
2. Everyone’s In Love With You
3. Another Town
4. I Can Wait
5. The Boy Who Never Cried
6. Steve’s Last Ramble
7. The Galway Girl
8. Lonelier Than This
9. Wherever I Go
10. When I Fall
11. I Don’t Want To Lose You Yet
12. Halo ‘Round The Moon
13. Until The Day I Die
14. All My Life
15. Over Yonder (Jonathan’s Song)

Steve Earle has released sixteen studio albums since his debut in 1986. Transcendental Blues is his ninth record, and has remained one of his most popular efforts. The album is highlighted by a very strong first half, although it does tail off significantly over the last eight tracks. But the first seven songs here make it worth having. Even though the last half is flawed, the first half is everything that’s great about Steve Earle: great songs, great guitars, and a guy having an incredibly great time doing what he loves to do…making music. The last eight tracks here aren’t terrible, but it’s hard to live up to the excellence of songs like “Everyone’s In Love With You”, “Another Town”, and “The Boy Who Never Cried”. And especially after the genius of the title track or the all out fun of “The Galway Girl”…well, I guess it’s tough to keep that up for 15 songs.

Earle’s band is, as usual, exceptional. Drummer Will Rigby of the dB’s is featured, as is the great Irish musician Sharon Shannon, who adds some nice accordion work on “The Galway Girl”. The better songs here add to Earle’s legacy as an alt-country legend and leading light, and the first half of this album should definitely be heard. There aren’t many albums of Earle’s that are clunkers…in fact, outside of maybe a poorly recorded live album from the early 90’s during his heroin days, Earle’s recorded output has been consistent and overall very good. Because it’s so uneven, this album doesn’t rank as one of his best, but it really is hard to go wrong with any album by Steve Earle. Especially those first seven songs…Really good stuff from an artist who has a strong, solid and entertaining body of work. This is just good, fun, well played alt-country by one of the masters of the genre.

Produced by Gomez. This band gets overlooked a lot, especially in the States. But I love a band that has three singers and four songwriters as strong as this, and In Our Gun, their third album, is a gem. "Shot Shot" was the obvious hit here, but the rest is never boring and as well written and performed as anything else you'll find. Ben Ottwell has been compared (a bit unfairly) to Eddie Vedder, but even though he has a bit of that quality to his voice, his songs are much more adventurous...as is all of the band's work. 2006-NEW WEST
Produced By DAVID BARBE

1. Feb 14
2. Gravity's Gone
3. Easy On Yourself
4. Aftermath USA
5. Goodbye
6. Daylight
7. Wednesday
8. Little Bonnie
9. Space City
10. A Blessing And A Curse
11. A World Of Hurt

A Blessing And A Curse is the 6th studio album by the carriers of the Southern rock torch Drive By Truckers. Unlike their previous albums which were more like drunken Skynyrd parties (in the best possible way), this album shows the band moving in different directions and showing that there is a lot more to them than just Southern boogie. The Truckers have a great lineup here. Mainstay guitarists Patterson Hood (son of horn player David Hood) and Mike Cooley write and sing their own material, which results in brutally honest pictures of Southern life (Hood) and backroads Charlie Daniels like craziness (Cooley). The great weapon from this period was Jason Isbell. A great player, singer and writer himself, this was his last album with DBT...maybe because he got only 2 songs on the album. Not enough for a songwriter as prolific and rising as Isbell.

The highlights of this album are everywhere as the band continues to grow and evolve. This is a great listen all the way through, and if you're not familiar with DBT, then you're in for a treat. This is a band, by the way, that has thrived on personnel changes: this and it's predecessor The Dirty South are the only two DBT albums to this point with the same lineup. Buy this album. You'll be happy you did. By the end of "A World Of Hurt", you'll be a fan.

Produced by Jack White III & Brendan Benson. Anyone who thought that Jack White would flounder outside of The White Stripes were proven wrong with this album. "Steady As She Goes" was an immediate hit, and the rest is more than solid. The Raconteurs are sometimes referred to as a supergroup, but only White was a widely known entity beforehand. They made another, just as good album, but this is the one that really has the punch. Powerful and solid from start to finish, this shows that White just may be the great rock hope. Produced by Jim Abbiss. This is supposed to be the kind of album I don't like. But I was hooked from the first listen to "Red Light Indicates Doors Are Secured". The pace of this album is furious, and the energy is endless. The album is almost flawless...its flaws make it even better. In 2006, I thought music was dying. This album changed my mind about that. This album makes me want to celebrate whatever I'm doing, which, to me, is the mark of a truly successful recording. [First added to this chart: 10/31/2012]

No production credit. "The Picture" shows that Jay Farrar can be upbeat if he wants to be. The Search has Farrar re-inventing his band once again, with really exceptional results. The simplicity of "Slow Hearse", the classic Son Volt theme of the excellent "Methamphetamine", fine front to back songwriting, the perfection of the band as a whole. Son Volt's albums are all pretty much great, but this one came out at a time that made it particularly special to me. This one by a nose over them all except for Trace. Produced by Jack White. Recorded in less than a week, the third album by The White Stripes is yet another strong entry in the Jack White catalog. "Fell In Love With A Girl" leads a solid track list that includes the excellent "Hotel Yorba", "Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground", and even the sweet "We're Going To Be Friends". I once didn't care a bit for The White Stripes...now, I can't imagine my library would be nearly as good without them. All of their work is well worth having. [First added to this chart: 11/30/2012]

In 2005, it was hard to find anyone more prolific than Ryan Adams. He released three albums that year: Cold Roses, Jacksonville City Nights, and 29. Jacksonville (a reference to Adam’s hometown in North Carolina) is the more country oriented of the three, and contains some of Adams’ more beautiful songs. With the opening track, Adams lets you know that this is most definitely a country album, led by Jon Graboff’s pedal steel. “Dear John” is a duet with Norah Jones, and almost all of the songs are listed as group compositions.

The album is not as strong as the excellent Cold Roses, but is still a fine album from Adams. Like all of his records, it does contain its share of filler, but unlike some of his efforts, it’s not too long that those lesser tracks become burdensome. Adams is a streaky writer…his streaks are very large, and he tends to record it all. Still, Jacksonville is a good look at the more country side of Ryan Adams.

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 84.0/100, a mean average of 81.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 83.5/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 18.3.

When I think of the 2000s, I think of punk, post-grunge, and alternative rock. That's almost nonexistent here, or at least ones that I like. I hate country, so we clearly have very different tastes but I don't care. There are some good ones like Green Day, The Killers, Weezer, Modest Mouse, Gorillaz etc., but that's few and far between. Overall, pretty boring and flat.

I couldn't agree more with your decision to list Cold Roses at #1, as it's definitely the album from the 2000s that has meant the most to me. Just a fantastic rock album, bringing together elements that remind me of much of the rock that I loved in the seventies: Grateful Dead and the Rolling Stones especially. I also love Funeral (I know everyone does, but it's for good reason), The Dirty South, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, and many others from your list. Tons of great Americana here--a fantastic list.

I haven't listened to many of the albums so I can't judge completely. However your comments are great, you are a Jayhawks fan like me (I wish we lived in that world where everyone loved RDM), you include other artists and bands I like like Wilco (Being There is great), Muse (you must include OOS!) or The Shins and I see no album I dislike so congrats for the chart.

Man this chart is awesome. 23 albums in common with mine, but i love more than half of the albums on this chart. Never could quite get in to Gomez, maybe hes due for an other listen. Also, havent listened to most of the later stuff by older artists. Anyway, great list!
