Produced by Robbie Robertson. It was supposed to have been the last show by The band, but they couldn't keep away. Except for Robbie Robertson. But regardless, this is the way to go out. Invite people like Van and Neil and Neil and Joni and Eric and Muddy and maybe Bob Dylan, too, to help send you on your way in style. This is how I'd like to end a band someday. With a big Scorsese production and the best musicians in the business stopping by to pay tribute by singing along with the band. Simply glorious. [First added to this chart: 12/04/2011]

Produced by Jeff Lynne. This album gets additional points for being my first purchase. I bought a stereo one piece at a time on layaway at 16, then bought this album and locked myself away for a week absorbing every second of it. It's a polished, excellent album, loaded with great sounding surprises. The stuff that works sounds even better today, while the small rest of it is tedious...but the memory of this album is an actual accomplishment. Always a special place in my heart for Out Of The Blue! [First added to this chart: 12/05/2011]

Produced by Geoff Haslam, Shel Kagan & The Velvet Underground. A lot of people dismiss Loaded, but I think it deserves a place next to the rest of the Velvet's work. Even above it. I know...Cale is gone, as is Mo Tucker. It's a Lou Reed album, but it shows that the Velvets could have done great pop music if they had stuck around. Some of Reed's best songs..."Sweet Jane", "Rock & Roll", and the best Velvet's song ever in "Who Loves The Sun", the saddest piece of candy ever. [First added to this chart: 12/04/2011]

Produced by George Harrison & Phil Spector. When George left The Beatles, he had years worth of songwriting just waiting to be released. All Things Must Pass is 3 records of newfound freedom...no more second fiddle to John & Paul. Like all of his solo work, this is open and spiritually honest, and you can hear the joy in his singing and playing. He was never this good again, but on this album, he was simply great. The best of all of the solo albums by The Beatles...and that's saying a lot. A triple solo debut album that works...yep! [First added to this chart: 12/04/2011]

Produced by George Harrison & Phil Spector. The very first big rock benefit concert brought together Eric Clapton, Billy Preston, Leon Russell, Ringo Starr, Ravi Shankar and Bob Dylan for one of the greatest live albums ever. Early live performances of George's later Beatles songs and the joy that shines from him onstage makes this worth every second. One of the great shining moments of the seventies, and a joy to listen to each and every time. Will always love you, George. [First added to this chart: 12/04/2011]

Produced by Pink Floyd. One of my favorite front to back listens ever. To me, this album puts all progressive rock records to shame. Shine On You Crazy Diamond is a monster of a track, and throughout the album David Gilmour proves more than ever that you don't have to play a million notes on the guitar to be brilliant. The title track is one of the most beautiful songs ever, and the overall mood of the album is as strong as anything you'll ever hear. This and Dark Side alternate as my Floyd favorites. I love this album. [First added to this chart: 12/04/2011]

Produced by Tom Dowd. Derek & The Dominos was one of the greatest bands ever assembled. Eric Clapton was at the top of his game (before he discovered JJ Cale and got all snoozy), and the addition of Duane Allman was genius. A powerful double album of mostly collaborations within the group and a handful of excellent covers. One of the greatest guitar albums of all time, and one of the best albums of the seventies. The crowning achievement of Clapton...and that's saying a lot. [First added to this chart: 12/04/2011]

Produced by Chris Thomas and Bill Price. This music, and the people who litened to it, used to scare the bejesus out of me. I know now that it was because I didn't understand what punk was supposed to be. I now find this album magnificent in its brutality. While bands like The Clash sang about things from a global perspective, Johnny Rotten sang about what was bugging HIM. There was also the band being dismissed as not being able to play their instruments...but as you can hear on this brilliant album, they really COULD play. [First added to this chart: 10/18/2012]

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 4% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 89.1/100, a mean average of 88.7/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 89.6/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 10.9.

Too much emphasis on classic rock for a higher rating than 80 sorry. Not a single German album in a decade that was defining for the German music scene??
