Top Greatest Albums #101-200 by AAL2014

The time has officially come. My top one hundred is full, yet ever-changing. But I just have too many records that I love and have listened to a number of times that just didn't (or just haven't up to this point) made the elite top 100 cut. It's going to be a hell of a ride putting this list together but eventually this will be filled too. As always, my favorite tracks from each album will be listed and the drummer(s) who play on the respective albums will be acknowledged.

This will be more of a rough draft than my Top 100 but I hope you enjoy, thank you for checking in!

Overall Chart #111

Live After Death is an album that made my main chart but was removed after a series of tough chart arrangements.

Like all of the classic era Iron Maiden studio albums, I have a long-standing love with Live After Death too.

I can remember this album being the soundtrack to many a bus ride to school and back. And while I went through plenty of Maiden records in that era of my life as well, this live album gives all of those classic songs a different feel and listening experience as a result. The band is playing most of these tracks much faster than their studio recording counterparts and I kind of love that Bruce’s voice isn’t in peak condition as it was the very end of the tour, it gives this album a more authentic, feel-like-you’re-there quality.

Additionally, as with any true Maiden live experience, the banter captured at different points of the record and namely Bruce commanding the different portions of Long Beach Arena to scream his way is.. *chefs kiss*

Over the years, I had a mental block with enjoying this album as a full piece. While acknowledging the obvious handful of masterpiece Yes songs Fragile offers, it always seemed too jagged and unfinished as a full album to rank it highly as a full piece. Fortunately, for me, I’ve come to really enjoy the little sonic world this record and its stories has to offer even in the slightly non-traditional ‘song-grout-song-grout’ etc format.

Regardless, the key to this album’s kingdom has always been the opener Roundabout and its majestic closer Heart of the Sunrise.

The Who and specifically Who’s Next have been so difficult for me to rank in my all time chart. I can make an easy case for this to be in my main 100 chart as the Who are such a great band and I think this is their best work. On top of that, I’m blown away by this track-listing.

The absolutely massive anthems, the bombastic live feel and, similarly, wonderfully captured drum sound, as well the early use of synth leads in a style that would influence the next era of rock nearly more than anything on this entire project.. there is a ton to remark on with this record.

Perhaps where I diverge from that line of thinking is that I don’t have a remarkable amount of time spent with Who’s Next top to bottom. I love the deeper cuts more with each listen, but for a long time I thought all I needed were the hits. That’s on me, however.

For now, the finest of the Who studio records finds a place firmly within my all-time top 125.

This record is pretty unbelievable. I was relatively new to this whole sound and aesthetic before pressing play on Un Insides, but I was absolutely blown away by the writing, attitude, and of course the otherworldly production.

SOPHIE guides us through her maze from heavenly cloud naps to hellish auditory assaults. The soundscapes across this record range from the size of a single mosquito to an entire swarm, sometimes within the scope of a few seconds.

Un Insides is a chaotic, triumphant masterpiece and it’s a travesty that we won’t be seeing decades of SOPHIE material.
