Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by LordMark

Alternative rock is my favourite genre, and that's why the 90s will probably always be my favourite decade of music. I also love Britpop (the best of which also comes from the 90s) and South Korean girl groups.

Definitely my favourite rap album. Nas' lyrical flow is excellent, and at only 40 minutes, it's surprisingly focused and doesn't overstay its welcome, unlike so many other albums in the genre. Lastly, it's nearly impossible to talk about Illmatic and not bring up one of rap music's greatest lines: "I never sleep, 'cause sleep is the cousin of death".

My favourite Supergrass album, which combines the urgency and youthful energy of I Should Coco with the maturity and musicianship of In It For The Money.

Of the 2 iconic Radiohead albums released in the 1990s, OK Computer is often considered the timeless classic while The Bends is often dismissed as "so 90s". But considering how excellent the 90s were, especially for alternative rock music, I'd hardly call that an insult. This is Radiohead's first consistently excellent album, with nearly every song being greater than or equal to Pablo Honey's "Creep".

I can only imagine how nerve-racking it was for Radiohead to return to the studio to record the follow-up to OK Computer, which at the time was already being cited as one of the greatest albums of all time by critics, fans, and musicians. Admittedly, I wasn't too fond of Kid A at first, and I disliked how Radiohead had all but abandoned rock music in favour of electronic. It took some time, but Kid A eventually grew on me, and I now think that even OK Computer sounds a bit dated in comparison. Most other bands would have played it safe and recorded OK Computer over and over again with diminishing returns, but not Radiohead.

Having spent more than 3 years establishing themselves as an iconic group in South Korea, Girls' Generation hit the ground running when they started promoting in Japan. It certainly didn't hurt that their Japanese debut had an excellent lead single ("Mr. Taxi"), a bunch of great album tracks, and Japanese versions of their Korean hits.

I tend to forget that this is a studio album, and not a greatest hits compilation. If you can find yourself a version that includes both "Elephant Stone" and "Fool's Gold" then, aside from "Love Spreads", you officially own the The Stone Roses' best songs on a single disc.

I've never understood why this album gets so much flack. Personally, I love it. It didn't have as much commercial appeal as Sixteen Stone, nor did it have an obvious single like "Machinehead". The thing I really love about Razorblade Suitcase is how oppressive it all sounds. It's dark and abrasive, and yet it's also quite seductive thanks to Gavin Rossdale's sexy voice.

This is a very powerful album, both musically and politically. The lyrics are just as relevant today as they were back in 1992, and while Rage went on to release 3 more great albums, their chemistry was never quite as strong as it was here, especially between frontman Zach de la Rocha and guitarist Tom Morello.

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 6% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 88.5/100, a mean average of 89.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 89.6/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 6.9.

It's different, but that is what makes this site such a delight. Thanks for wearing your heart in your chart. I will have a look at some of your choices that are new to me - like Econoline Crush.

Wow. Naveed at Number 2. I've got Clumsy in my Top 100 and Naveed a little further down. It's always great to see OLP.

Definitely more 90s focused than most charts you see, but still some wonderful albums and many I haven't heard of and would be interested in checking out. I'm really intrigued by all the K-Pop!
