Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by LordMark

Alternative rock is my favourite genre, and that's why the 90s will probably always be my favourite decade of music. I also love Britpop (the best of which also comes from the 90s) and South Korean girl groups.

The best live album I've ever listened to, and definitive proof that Kurt Cobain sounded just as good (if not better) on stage than he did in the studio. In order to put on a great show, Nirvana didn't need to perform their biggest hits (aside from "Come As You Are"), nor did they need to cover popular songs (aside from "The Man Who Sold the World"). Fun fact: after "Where Did You Sleep Last Night", MTV wanted an encore, but Cobain refused because he didn't think he could top his performance of that song. Can you really blame him?

It's not too often that a band goes on hiatus for nearly 15 years, and then returns with their best album to date, but that's exactly what happened with Moist. David Usher's voice sounds just as great as it did in the 90s.

It has a similar sound to The King of Limbs, but it's a bit lighter and more accessible this time around, and the songs are definitely stronger.

Of the 4 big Seattle grunge bands of the early 90s, Alice In Chains were definitely the best warning sign about drug abuse. Part of why I love this album so much is because despite the lyrical content, Layne Staley never sounds like he's trying to glamorize the fact that he's a lonely, depressed, out of control addict who refuses to accept any lifelines. Even during the final decade of his life, it seemed like the last thing Layne wanted was for his fans to look up to him.

When Suede disbanded shortly after the release of 2002's A New Morning, Brett Anderson said, "I need to do whatever it takes to get my demon back." And while 2013's Bloodsports was a great comeback album for Suede, I still believe that it was on this follow-up that Brett's "demon" began to thrive again. And even though he was almost 50 when Night Thoughts was recorded, Brett's voice is as excellent as it's ever been.

Suede's pop album still sounds pretty damn good to these ears. Being Bernard Butler's replacement as lead guitarist is a difficult task, but Richard Oakes proved himself worthy.

"If I could choose to be remembered for just one musical document, it would be this. All the early promise and ambition of the band matured in this record as we took the initial vision and stretched it, travelling as far away as possible from the parochial, jingoistic cartoon that was forming in British music at the time." - Brett Anderson, in the liner notes of the 2011 re-issue.

The main album is excellent, but the alternate tracklisting that Brett gives in the liner notes is even better. If he could rewrite history, he would replace "The Power" and "Black or Blue" with "My Dark Star", "The Living Dead", and "Killing of a Flash Boy".

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 6% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 88.5/100, a mean average of 89.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 89.6/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 6.9.

It's different, but that is what makes this site such a delight. Thanks for wearing your heart in your chart. I will have a look at some of your choices that are new to me - like Econoline Crush.

Wow. Naveed at Number 2. I've got Clumsy in my Top 100 and Naveed a little further down. It's always great to see OLP.

Definitely more 90s focused than most charts you see, but still some wonderful albums and many I haven't heard of and would be interested in checking out. I'm really intrigued by all the K-Pop!
