Hidden Gems (overlooked albums) by Jorbaa Unknown

Years ago I made another overlooked albums / hidden gem list.
In the past few years I learned to know more albums, which I wanted to share with you.
This chart has an empasis on 'hidden', meaning it's hard to track down or even hear some of these albums.
But is you track them down, you won't be dissapointed.
I will list the genre and 'similar' artists. Happy hunting!

Genre: Psych pop, sunshine pop, aldult contemporary, vocal pop, pastoral pop, big band.
You may like this if you like: Nancy Sinatra, lee hazlewood, Lana del Rey

This is the holy grail of hidden gems.
I saw this one on an auction site, and i wondered why on earth someone would pay this much for an album.
There is not much information online regarding this album. It's also not on streaming services.
But the album somehow got a reputation, and it's because of the music.

Shifting between gorgeous slow pieces, high tempo short pieces and some psychedelic sunshine pop, this album is very varied, but all done with such quality production and singing.
Ottilie Patterson was know as a big band singer in the late 50's and early 60's. Her career was on a downslide when she recorded this. Almost no one listened, but someone got the genius of this album and re-released it in 1971 with a differend track order and one omitted track. It was released as 'Spring song', but also did not sell.
That albus was included on a 'weirdest albums ever' list bij mojo. But don't expect to be weirded out. although it may have been weird in the time to hear these songs from a big band jazz/blues singer.

The album is still on youtube the day I write this.
Please search for highlights 'Spring Song' and 'Helen of Kirkconnel'.
Try this album at least 2 times as a whole, thank me later.

If someone from Light in the Attic is reading: Please reissue this.
Same goes with number 6, would fit right into your catalog!

Genre: Country, progressive rock, soundtrack, mood music, ambient country
You may like this if you like: Soundtracks from the 70s, A country form of Yes, Gene Clark,

Forget all you know about the Monkees and Michael Nesmith. This album sounds nothing like his former projects or albums.
The music can best be describes as ambient counrty rock. It can set a mood greatly.
Believe it or not: This album is part of a 'multimedia experience'.
The vinyl was sold with a book inside the box set. You were supposed to read the book, while listening to the music. It was supposed to create 'an unique experience'.
I don't have the book, but i hope to try it one day. Because the music without the book is already great, so i can't imagine how it would be even better.

The time i write this: Two songs are available on youtube:
- Dance between the raindrops (very recommended to listen to this!)
- The opening theme (as part om the album Autobiographical riffs)

The album itself is long out of print. You can buy a copy on the official Michael Nesmith website, but only if you live in teh USA. Outside the USA, we can only hope for a reissue, with the book ofcouse!

Genre: Psych Rock, Acid Rock, Art Rock
You may like this if you like: Jimmy Hendrix, The bonzo dog band, artsy stuff

This is a weird one: Bubblegum songs covered with the meaning of deforming them onto something else.
People used to hate bubblegum songs (and still do). Kasenetz and Katz for the devil for some people, scoting hit after hit with mindless, soulless music.
Some record producer had enough and decided to step up. He gathered a 'band' and let them have a piss with some bubblegum hits. In very different ways.
You have the 60's psychedelic guitar versions, like 'Little bit O' Soul' and 'Yummy Yummy'. But they also do a choral jazz interpretation of 'Hanky panky'.. Yeah this stuff gets weird quick.
They also managed to write 2 originals. One of these 2 songs contains a clear message of what they think of bubblegum music: 'Sitting in your record booth / Making up your nonsene rhymes'. Savage

Some tracks are on youtube, but sadly not all. Try to track this one down 'anyway you can'!

Genre: 60's rock, psychedelic rock, early hard rock
You may like this if you like: Steppenwolf, Iron Butterfly, Jefferson Airplane.

Did you know that one of the best en most influential rock songs is a cover?
Stepenwolf's hit 'Born to be wild' was written en recorded by this band earlier. It helps that the main singer/songwriter of Mars Bonfire was in a early version of Steppenwolf. The band would later cover more songs from this record.
Here you have an album full of great rock songwriting. Songs waiting to heared and covered by other bands.
This album for me is a relavation. Almost all songs are winners with great hooks. This album should have been as big as steppenwolf!
My personal favorites are : 'Ride With me', 'Christina's Arms' and ofcourse their version of 'Born to be wild'.

The album is available on streaming services, so what are you waiting for... listen to this!
And please make a reissue.

Genre: Disco, Electronic Disco, 70's pop
You may like this if you like: Giorgio Moroder, Diana Summer, italian disco.

This is a little german relic. Great electronic disco with a few poppy/bullegum style devations along the way.
Could pass for a Giorgio Moroder album if he stayed a schlager singer.

Some tracks are on youtube, maybe all of the tracks are if you search good.
A must have/listen for any disco fan!

Genre: Singer/songwriter, pop/rock, psychedeliv pop/rock
You may like this if you like: 80's king Crimson, The beatles

I love this album. Musically it can be complex with its guitars and rhythm. But the songs themself are perfect popsongs. It may take a few times to listen to, but promise me, it's worth it.

Available on streaming services.
