Top 100 Music Albums of the 2000s by craab

My "best of" is really more accurately described as my "favorite." I do not claim to have heard every good album that should be considered for this chart and I also realize that the music I have heard and enjoyed has been influenced by my cultural location. The chart will change as I listen to more music.

Carlile is an out of this world talent. This is her best album in my opinion. The twins (her back up band) really need more credit for how much they contribute. They co-write a lot of the songs and their harmonies add a lot of texture. They were in a punk band before joining up with Brandi and that gives Carlile's music a different kind of edge. The Proclaimers became extremely famous through the use of songs from their LP Sunshine on Leith on soundtracks for Benny and Joon and Schreck. Outside of the UK, my sense is that people don't know the rest of their catalogue that well. Sunshine on Leith is one of the greatest albums of all time IMO. Persevere is on the same level. While there are a couple stinkers (as there were on SOL), the highs are really high. Favorite tracks: "There's a Touch," "Sweet Little Girls," "Land Fit For Zeroes," "Don't Give It To Me," and "Act of Remembrance." The latter is a song about a father's death and is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. While the Proclaimers always sound like the Proclaimers, no body else could ever sound like them. They are one of the most original bands in the business, even as a pop group. [First added to this chart: 11/24/2021]

The follow up to Poses is a beautiful baroque pop album where Rufus reaches new heights as an artist. This is far more than a collection of songs. It's the album as a whole that is a true work of art. Beatlesque. [First added to this chart: 11/24/2021]

This is a great collection of songs. Girls in their Summer Clothes and Long Walk Home are the two highlights IMO but almost every track is memorable. The production is a tad over compressed which is unfortunate. [First added to this chart: 11/24/2021]

Red Dirt Girl is not quite at the level of Wrecking Ball but it's very good and deserves to come out of the shadow of WB. I see it as a little more in Emmylou's usual vein but under the influence of what she did on Wrecking Ball. Dave Matthews makes a memorable, and pretty great, guest appearance. I know women artists were always there, but before the 2000s my music collection was dominated by male rockers. The 2000s turned out to be the decade where that changed for me and now I listen to as many if not more female artists as male ones. This album, released near the beginning of the decade, was part of launching me down the path of exploring more female voices. I got introduced to it at Starbucks where I used to work and where it was one of the albums that got piped into the store. Though the music at Starbucks was corporate approved, at least it was good music! I remember Blacklisted, Heartbreaker, and Poses being on heavy rotation at Starbucks in 2002!
