Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. What a fantastic buildup! And then it turns out that what it's building up to is... *that*.
Oh well. At least it's more listenable than Dinosaur Jr's "Don't".
Such a strange song, Sonic Youth kept this one in the vaults for a long time, it may have been one of their first songs, forgotten over the years. I forget the circumstances under which they brought this one back (I haven't been reading up on SY as much as I used to lately), but I'm glad they did. It may not be a pop tune in line with the rest of the album, but it's a great, ferocious indie rocker that I'll always love.

I guess I've got the unpopular opinion here then; that frantic cascade into noise chaos is so damn awesome.
Song was great til the end... geez, was not expecting that one
