Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 69.9/100, a mean average of 68.4/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 69.5/100. The standard deviation for this album is 17.9.

“Oh, No! It's Devo” is a confounding album. The synths sound cheap, dated, and simple, but it works. The mass-produced plastic sound creates an addicting energy that never lets up. “Big Mess” is the apex of this with its tight sequencing and luring short solos. Similarly, the lyricism is blunt and flat but revealing with momentum. A basic lyric about being out of place becomes a commoditized sensation being sold to you. It’s equally eerie and goofy. Devo has molded their irony into a cheap plastic toy and it’s a good product.
I'm with 8BitKid six years before me. They grew beyond what looked designed to be a one-hit-wonder novelty act by this point, they honed their craft as songwriters and arrangers as they went along, and on Freedom of Choice, this album and New Traditionalists, they turn out their best work. Intended as arty party music, working the same territory as the B-52s, Adam & the Ants, Blondie, etc, synth-based power pop. I'll take New Traditionalists as my favorite, but all three of those albums are excellent.
I love this album and actually went to the concert in Detroit back in the day. I actually think this is their last great album as Shout was sort of the decline of the group. Time Out For Fun, Speed Racer, Big Mess.... My all time favorite group
still witty, but the songs no longer create the momentum of the ancestors. nevertheless not bad.
This album, in my opinion, is flawless. Many fans of Devo claim this is when they began to go downhill. They are dead wrong. Oh, No! is a synth pop classic, with catchy songs, fun lyrics and great musicianship. If you are a fan of synth pop, get this album. If you want to start getting Devo albums, get either their debut, or Freedom of Choice before this one. In my opinion, they aren't as good, although they are great albums, but they feature more of their classic hits.
