Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).

We're not really getting anywhere, are we? "Oversteps" immediately follows the underwhelming "Quaristice" and just about manages to top it, but only just. Once again, Autechre flirt with ambient and although "Oversteps" feels more unified than their last record, it just isn't a very strong statement. I'm happy that they pulled it back together for "Exai".
A decent experience, hell, it actually proves to be quite beautiful throughout. Unfortunately, "Oversteps" continues down Quaristice's path by hearkening to Autechre's glory days of the early 90s. Yes, the ambient genre is brought back along with many shimmering melodies, but similarly to 2008's "Quaristice", this record also feels like a stagnation of Autechre's creativity and innovation.
It's bound to satisfy the audience who found themselves lost once "Chiastic Slide" came out, but for the rest of us who actually loved their dazzling early/mid 00s albums, we're no doubt left feeling cold by their attempts at injecting some warm, leftover ambience. Nevertheless, it's definitely worth a listen, as are all their albums.
