Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album is rated in the top 23% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 73.9/100, a mean average of 72.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 74.0/100. The standard deviation for this album is 14.5.

This album is a lot better than people give it credit for... Some of Weller's most beautiful songs in "Ghosts" and "Carnation," and "Town Called Malice" is an all-time classic. There's not really any useless songs on this, and he's trying a lot of new styles, most of which turn out fairly well.
The Jam's final album is a bit of a disappointment. It's obvious the band, or at least Paul Weller, are moving away from their rock roots and heading towards that r'n'b sound that Weller would embrace with The Style Council. Still, there are some good songs; precious, ghosts, and off course the brilliant, town called malice. I'm not really sure why Weller felt it necessary to break up The Jam, maybe he felt fans wouldn't take to the new slick soul sound. Either way, The Jam were a great band, never to be forgotten.
Not their best album. A bit inconsistent but there are still plenty of good songs on the album.
