Top 30 Music Albums of 1970 by Mother Nature's Son
My favourite albums of 1970.
Really many great albums came out this year. The two greatest Beatles solo albums, the best from Simon & Garfunkel, Neil Young, Black Sabbath, The Stooges and many more. A great transitional year between the late flower power 60s and what would be known as the 70s.

The tensions between the members really come across here. It's a disoriented album where the live performances don't really belong together with Phil Spector's overproduction on certain tracks. However, I love the sporadic feel of the album and it still contains enough gems to top most albums made today.

My introduction to Simon & Garfunkel was through the "The Essential Simon & Garfunkel" compilation on which nearly all songs from this album appear, unlike with the other S&G albums. That's probably why I feel more nostalgic about this one. Sadly, I don't think any folk-act will ever sound as beautiful as Simon & Garfunkel harmonizing together, but they apparently needed to cross that bridge over troubled water and split up after this album.

The Beatles are no more and John Lennon is left disillusioned. The dream is over. John knew he needed to carry on. I need to carry on. We're all gonna carry that weight, remember? It's an emotionally painful album about us humans in our most fragile situations. Nothing really can help me better through hard times than this confessional journey.

Absolutely the way to go for George Harrison to release an overwhelming triple album (double, if you exclude the not so necessary jam part) after The Beatles split up. No longer was he kept in the shadow and no longer did he need to listen to any wah-wahs from either Paul or John. He was free to go crazy and so he did (and with Phil Spector as producer, things went only even crazier)!

Not something revolutionary, just The Beach Boys adding some summery, fresh, crispy, delicate, delightful music to your day. The small details are what makes this album!

Into the mystic again with Van Morrison. Not as overwhelming as "Astral Weeks" and with more radio friendly tunes, but without ever losing the glorious Van Morrison spirituality. It's quite jazzy and it's Van Morrison in his prime. Join the moondance now!

Epic guitar rock by the young super madman, David Bowie. Focuses a little less on actual songwriting than his next two album, but makes up for this with a cooler and often weirder sound, like on the epic roar of opener "The Width of a Circle"!

Without Badfinger there wouldnt' be any famous version (by Mariah Carey among others) of "Without You". The version here was apparently not a hit by Badfinger themselves and interestingly not even released as a single (which might explain why it wasn't a hit). The song is perhaps quite diffferent to its chart-topping little brothers/sisters; the chorus sounds more sporadic and desperate with a beautiful Procol Harum-esque organ solo at the end. Also, there wouldn't be an incredible album with deliciously Beatlesque touches called "No Dice"!

Drop by the Morrison hotel if you're in for some relatively straightforward on the road blues. Up to this point the least psychedelic Doors album, but the music is so cool and laid back, and the musicianship so fantastic that you couldn't ask for more. Perfect for a sunny day on a highway in L.A. in a cabriolet!

Oh, lonesome me, this has to be one of the mellowest albums ever. His fragile high-pitched voice, the country flavour, the mostly acoustic instrumentation, the overall laid-back melancholic feel. A gold album that rushes by in no time!
