Like Nick Drake's PINK MOON, this is almost too bleak to listen to at times, though a supremely gifted achievement. Unlike the former's personal depression, this album focuses on the social variety, the no-hope, dead-end underbelly of the great American dream, the endless night before the brave new dawn of BORN IN THE USA. Your heart breaks for all of them; mine especially for good cop Joe and his ne'er-do-well brother, trying to do the right thing all his life while being loyal to his family. God, ain't life a bitch sometimes!

Aw, come ON now - don't you dare deny that you did the moonwalk to this! All the brouhaha surrounding Michael Jackson - funny ha-ha and funny peculiar - I've studiously avoided in favour of a critical appraisal of the music: and while I think the colossal success of this album obscures the equally fine achievement of OFF THE WALL, you just can't deny its excellence. A mate of mine at the time said he couldn't stand it, but he KNEW it was good - and he could have been a concert pianist! Six hit singles (or was it seven?) and the other tracks could have been, and plenty of visuals if you wanted them - what's not to like?

I've a personal reason for being fond of this album - it was riding high when my mum died, and my sister and I used to talk about her while she played it. That said, while more easy listening than my usual picks, I still think it's a fine example of The Bee Gees' magic in boosting the career of a fine soul-pop singer; perhaps their "meaningless songs" don't sound quite so meaningless with a class act to front them.

His biggest commercial success, after his flirtation with trad jazz, and listening to it makes me wonder why he didn't stay on top for longer - except that perhaps he didn't want to. This is a very polished album, noted for its varied percussive textures and jazz-tinged piano, but the lyrics are quite sardonic takes on feminism, popular culture and health freakery, among other subjects. I always thought Joe Jackson had a really GREAT album in him that never quite came out; this is a very good one, though.

Thank you buzzdainer for your most generous comments. It's not my favourite decade but there are still many hidden gems to be found there among the rough, hard-nosed Thatcher/Reagan years. You always make intelligent comments on music, so I hope to have the pleasure of your online company again sometime.

Outstanding chart! The Stone Roses, Nebraska, Graceland, and Purple Rain are all outstanding albums. I appreciate seeing the Indigo Girls' self-titled album in your top ten, as it's one that was in my regular rotation back when it came out. Overall a bunch of great selections. Pleased to see so many excellent female artists represented here.
