It had to be, didn't it? Not being a big jazz or 50s fan, I didn't think I'd bother with this chart - but there are a few gems which it would be a shame not to acknowledge. This album has had a remarkable journey from cult classic to near-universal acclaim both inside and outside the jazz world from which it emanates. I suppose it's because it seems to transcend even modern jazz into a soulful mysticism that cuts across musical boundaries. One of those albums I don't listen to every day, because it wold spoil the effect, but one that has an almost sacred beauty.

Well, the band may have been satin, but the voice certainly wasn't; and that's the peculiar appeal of this swansong. Billie was in her early 40s by this time, but she wasn't long for this world, said world having taken its toll on her in more ways than one - as her ravaged, pain-soaked vocals attest. You'd be forgiven for thinking she really was "glad to be unhappy" - after listening to this, you might be too, occasionally.

The pensive melancholy of the "wee small hours" has given way to beaming sunshine as Ol' Blue Eyes twinkles his way through this most optimistic of albums which shows Sinatra at his buoyant best and adds a touch of class to any collection. Love is definitely here to stay on this record - hardly a cloud in the sky as Frank sings of its many shades of joy, making it hard to believe that he could ever have sung songs like 'One For My Baby' or 'Mood Indigo'. Forget 'My Way' and 'Strangers In The Night' - I wouldn't give you tuppence for them (and neither would Frank, by all accounts): THIS, and similar Capitol recordings, is what seals his deserved reputation as The Voice, and it manages to be a masterpiece that isn't drowning in its own tears.

If he'd never recorded anything else, this album alone would have assured Nat King Cole's place in musical history. As it is, it marks the apotheosis of this truly gentle man's talent: tender, melancholy, wistful, pensive. . .this is no cheesy sentiment, but pure romance. The first three tracks are standards he has made absolutely his own, that lesser talents (and there have been many) cover at their peril; and while the remaining tracks don't quite reach that high watermark on their own, taken together they create a complete mood piece that, despite being released before the album fully came into its own, prefigured the virtues of the form and demands to be heard as a whole.

Peggy Lee's coolly seductive style, like that of Julie London, displays an authentic white jazz idiom that is every bit as powerful as Ella's or Billie's, precisely through its understatement. Rather than bourbon, Lee drowns her lovelorn sorrows in black coffee and nicotine, the pre-Valium "mother's little helpers", as it were; but the forlorn longing is the same. A spirited lass, she doesn't stay permanently in the doldrums; there's a fine version of 'I Didn't Know What Time It Was', and on the 1956 extended reissue, a quirky, varie-speed version of 'It Ain't Necessarily So'. Not much sugar in the coffee, though - but that's the way I like it.
