2016 was a phenomenal year for music fans for a number of reasons. For some, it was a record year solely because it marked the long-awaited return of Radiohead after their release of King of Limbs. I've grown accustomed to people kissing the very earth Thom Yorke walks upon, and as soon as I heard Radiohead would finally be releasing new material, I eagerly anticipated the praise any old project the band threw out would inevitably receive from critics and fans alike. Of course, I'm a huge Radiohead fan myself (Kid A is one of my favorite albums of all time, after all), but I'm aware that their reputation tends to be a bit overblown.
With that being said, the new album finally came out, and I obediently shelled out my $10.99 to give it a listen. In that first listening experience, I was greeted with an emotional tour-de-force. With A Moon Shaped Pool, Radiohead have taken the minimalist mentality present throughout King of Limbs and given it the urgency it needed to really demand attention. What many perceived to be elevator music has been nurtured into an ambient masterpiece that almost serves as a spiritual successor to In Rainbows. The simplistic chord progressions and minimalist instrumentation grow and expand into lush orchestral arrangements in a way that speaks to not only to the evolutionary change from the beginning to end of the album, but within Radiohead themselves. This is Radiohead at the height of their maturity, and A Moon Shaped Pool truly is a gift to the fans. [First added to this chart: 06/18/2016]
