Afternooners is the third and final collection of gay porno soundtracks by the seminal Patrick Cowley. Although not as expansive or spacious as the previous collections, the music does inhabit the same amyl soaked nether-world with enough space, if not the strength to dream.

I've been waiting for a...comprehensive collection such as this to detail the musical legacy of that most iconic of cities, Manchester. And Cherry Red Records with the aid of the Manchester District Music Archive have done a sterling job here. Starting with the advent of punk and the Buzzcocks Spiral Scratch EP to the dominance of Factory Records and the Hacienda over the musical landscape to the arrival of Britpop uberlords Oasis, the journey is a breathtaking, thrilling journey. Right now, it almost feels unbelievable that it happened or that only one city managed to revel in so much talent. But it did. Rave on. [First added to this chart: 06/09/2017]

It's no understatement that Punk caused a schism musically, its scorched earth baptism of fire causing many to announce 1976 as Year Zero, but it's moment in the sun was short lived and by the end of 1977 it was over and the Post-Punk ideology was by now the way forward. This box-set chronicles the UK side of things, furiously mixing future legends, footnotes and obscurities, documenting a sound that is still providing rich dividends to this day. Austerity is a key word here, but so is innovation and the spectre of Punks sworn enemy Prog Rock is rarely far away (hello This Heat) but it is brilliant and yes, fascinating.

The second of Cherry Red's imaginary sequels to the seminal NME C86 tape. The guitars still jangle, the songs are still produced on a shoe-string budget, and the celebrated environs of musty bedsit-land is never far away. But yet, the scene has a loveable (child-like) charm and innocence that was sadly swept away by the more commercially driven strains of Madchester and Brit-pop, as well as providing a fertile springboard for future big-hitters The Stone Roses and The House Of Love.
Harking back to a time when indie was more of an ideology than a genre, C88 is a welcome addition to any self respecting indie fan's collection. Just remember, it's different for domeheads. [First added to this chart: 04/28/2017]
