Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 72.0/100, a mean average of 71.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 71.9/100. The standard deviation for this album is 12.0.

Here’s the thing . . . I’ve always liked the work of one Joshua Tillman and each one of his releases under the F.J.M pen name has appeared on my year end favourite album list. However he’s yet to release “The Masterpiece” even though some critics claim each releases is exactly that. The trouble I have with his albums is that they are so darn inconsistent. For example each one has a slam dunk rolled gold killer track (‘Fear Fun’ had “Hollywood Forever” / ‘I Love You, Honeybear’ had “The Night Josh Tillman Came To Town” / ‘Pure Comedy’ had “Total Entertainment Forever” which btw is his finest 3 minutes and ‘Gods Favorite Customer’ had “Please Don’t Die”) and a handful of good to ok tracks but ultimately spoiled by a bloated running time and 3 tracks that simply should have made the cutting room floor and so history repeats itself on 2022’s ‘Chloe blah blah blah’
Rolled Gold Killer Track = “Buddy’s Rendezvous”
Good To OK Tracks = “Goodbye Mr.Blue” [which by the by rips off Harry Nilsson’s ‘Everybody’s Talkin’] , “Kiss Me” , “Q4” with its melatron keys and “We Could Strangers”
Cutting Room Floor = everything else
Summary - Good and definitely recommended but far from great
There's just something so classy and feel good about Father John Misty's work that I doubt I could ever dislike any project he puts out. This record leans into the classiness in particular and I enjoyed that very much.
I know this album has left a bad taste for a lot of long time fans and it’s by no means his best album I personally really enjoy the new direction. I love the jazzy roaring 20s kind of vibe. I feel like this album had a lot of potential but came out half baked. Not great but an interesting new sound that I hope he builds on. 7.5/10
