Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album is rated in the top 16% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 74.3/100, a mean average of 73.8/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 74.4/100. The standard deviation for this album is 13.3.

Very solid album that shows off The Band's full instrumental and vocal capabilities; feels a lot fuller sounding than some of the older folkier stuff. A little bit up and down, but the highs are quite high—Ophelia is a great, fun song that stays in your head forever, It Makes No Difference is beautiful with its sad lyrics and sax, and Acadian Driftwood might be the single best song The Band ever did.
Great album.
A well underrated record. Music from Big pink and the self titled album quite rightly get the recognition they deserve but, Northern lights-Southern cross, like, Stage fright, is an excellent record. Forbidden fruit, Acadian driftwood, and especially, It makes no difference, are as good as anything on their first two albums. Having said that, this is probably The Band's last top quality album. It's not quite as consistently brilliant as those first two albums but it's still very good.
This is a way underrated record by The Band. A return of form of sorts the production and choice of material is top notch.
a return to form after the previous 2 records
It's hard to pick a favorite Band album, but "It Makes No Difference" is one of my all time favorite songs
You could tell they were returning to their roots... This is more earthy and raw. This got a tonne of airplay in Canada, because it seems like the most Canadian of the Band's releases. Excellent. Just shy of The Band and Big Pink.
This is such a fantastic album that I imagine the only reason why it isn't on more people's favorite charts is because it received no airplay. "Acadian Driftwood" is, IMO, the all time greatest track. Garth Hudson's keyboard flourishes add a whole other dimension that really define this album...probably more so than on the other Band albums. This song is a spiritual experience, one of the ones you have to check out before you die.
