Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 62.5/100, a mean average of 58.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 59.1/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 27.3.

This shows why so many magazines cannot be accepted.

The list has so many bands who were just popular fads. Ash? Oasis? Coldplay? OutKast? Linking Park? Ryan Adams? I might be biased because I hated that era of music so much and it turned me away from the commercial radio that was the only available listening in cloistered Melbourne suburbs, but why did Q’s writers think in such a short-term manner if they knew anything at all about the history of music?

It is true that limitations on the number of albums per artist add a welcome flavour and allow for a few non-fad artists to be included, but some of those artists, like Beck, have always been awful and overrated.

I had to do a double take when I saw Eminem in the top 10. No offense but was not expecting that
