Nels Cline is one of my favorite guitarists. I had the good fortune to see him live with Wilco and he was an absolute revelation. His work with Wilco is great, but his work on his own is fantastic as well, and this album is one of his most enjoyable and straightforward projects to date. Over the course of an hour, he tackles some old standards and peppers in some original compositions that makes for a relaxing, encapsulating listen. At its most basic, listening to Nels Cline's pure talent on guitar is just mind-blowing, and if you can't appreciate the music, you can definitely appreciate his skill. His playing is effortless, and it's that ease that makes this album move so smoothly. [First added to this chart: 11/04/2016]

Natasha Khan takes on a really difficult subject on this album. The Bride is a concept album that tells the story of a woman whose soon-to-be husband dies in a car accident on his way to their wedding. It chronicles the happiness she feels before the wedding, the confusion and shock of hearing about the accident, the devastation afterwards, and her attempt at recovering from it. It's not easy to depict that level of grief as accurately as Khan does. Through her music, lyrics, and delivery, she's able to take you inside the head of this woman who has suffered such an unimaginable tragedy. One of the themes is the idea that this woman sees everything as belonging to her late husband. She's riding home in his car, with his empty seat, she lies in his bed. No matter what she's doing, she's constantly thinking of him, missing him, dealing with this horrible loss. It's a tragically beautiful album, and one that ends with a little bit of hope that one day, she'll love again. [First added to this chart: 09/14/2016]

James Vincent McMorrow is really good at vocal arrangements. We saw that with Post-Tropical, which was a fantastic album, and he continues it in We Move. This isn't as good as Post-Tropical, but it's still a very good album. McMorrow comes from the same ilk as musicians like Bon Iver, the falsetto, quiet music type (well, maybe not 2016 Bon Iver). There's a hint of hip-hop on this album that blends well with McMorrow's acoustic arrangements and ends up mixing together to make a really interesting album. If you liked Post-Tropical, you'll likely enjoy this too. [First added to this chart: 12/14/2016]

You can always tell a Grouplove album, and mostly that's because of Christian Zucconi's ridiculously high voice. This album is pretty much what you'd expect from Grouplove, a fun, catchy album full of hippie dance tunes. They do what they do really well. Songs like "Do You Love Someone" and "Welcome To Your Life" will get stuck in your head forever. There's not a ton of lyrical depth to them, but it's just downright fun. Gojira has been around forever and have established themselves as one of the greatest bands in metal, but even a band that's been around a long time can change things up once in awhile, and Gojira does a bit. They went for a more contemplative feel on some of the tracks here, rather than the typical high-energy approach they go for. It's clear that the Duplantier brothers poured all the pain and anguish they felt from losing their mother into this album, it's an emotional album, and as such, it's powerful. Technically speaking, it's impressive, and that should really come as no surprise from Gojira. The guitar solos at the end of Silvera are enough to drop any guitarists jaw. Overall, it's a really well-done album, and another addition to the fantastic discography that is Gojira's. [First added to this chart: 09/08/2016]

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 1% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 93.3/100, a mean average of 95.4/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 96.5/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 7.8.

Comprehensive, detailed, varied. It boggles my mind how a single person can know a year so intimately. This is more than just an assembled list; each album has clearly been given due attention before its placement. There's just the right balance of familiar and obscure too, a surprise from someone whose overall chart has a fair bit of classic rock. This might as well be from a one-man music publication - I'll be sure to pay your charts more attention in future!

This is great, I love the fact that you rate acclaimed and famous albums and the unknown ones the same. I hope to learn from your charts since I've never heard about a bit portion of stuff here.

"This is an album that sounds like maybe it's at peace with itself" - probably because it's Richmond Fontaine final album? :F

There's a lot here for me to look into, and already a bit I disagree with. Seems like it could be particularly interesting how this shifts as the second half of the year comes through. Will be looking through this lots.

I was originally rating this so you could eventually rate my 2016 chart, but your comments once again show that I'm not worthy. Amazing job, Rocky, especially as your picks are just as extraordinary as what you write about them.
