Every time I listen to a Swans record, I feel like I need to reevaluate my life afterwards. No band has been able to so accurately depict psychological terror and turmoil like Swans, and this album continues that. If you heard the last two albums from Swans, you know what to expect on this. It's a bit more subdued (at least, to the extent that a Swans album can be subdued) than the other two, but it's still full of the ferocity and violence that was on the other two. Listening to a Swans album is often an exercise in existential self-reflection, and this is exactly that. You'll leave this album, perhaps feeling at peace in some kind of way, but not entirely. It's a roller coaster of an album, clocking in around two hours, and it's quite impressive. [First added to this chart: 07/19/2016]

If you're into something like getting your groove on, then Moon Hooch is for you. There's just something primal that kicks in on this album, Moon Hooch's goal is to get you move, to make you sweat and dance, and man do they accomplish that goal on this album. Moon Hooch is essentially a jazz trio, two saxophonists, and a drummer, and it's probably the most fun you'll have listening to a jazz album released this year. While they're great at making you groove, they know that doing the same thing over and over again gets old, so they do slow it down, there is a bit of variety here, but first and foremost, Moon Hooch is going to make you dance, and you'll love it. Dev Hynes is really good at blending different, almost seemingly unrelated, genres of music together to create something that's emotionally resonant with anyone who hears it. This album is kind of the ultimate culmination of all of that, and in my opinion, it's better than his last album. Freetown Sound is kind of a sonic collage, with different pieces of different genres scattered all about the album. That may sound like something that would be a cacophonous, disjointed mess, but Hynes is able to cohesively bring it all together to make something emotionally powerful. The album is largely autobiographical, and deals with a lot of political issues (as Hynes has never been shy to do before), and Hynes handles it very well. It's certainly a unique-sounding album and easily the best thing Hynes has put out yet. [First added to this chart: 09/09/2016]

Modern-day hip-hop rooted deeply in old school soul music. Like, late-60s, early-70s soul. Adrian Younge rocks a Hammond Organ along with a vibraphone and even a Mellotron, but with all those "older" instruments you might think the album would sound dated, or at least, would sound like it's trying to be "old", but it's not. It's modernized, it's emotional, full of love and happiness. Soaring vocals, smooth music, it's all excellently composed and beautifully done. [First added to this chart: 01/28/2016]

It wouldn't be wrong to think that there's nothing new that can be done in rock music. Over the past 60 years, a lot has been done in rock music, and even more has been copied and done to death, so when you look at Night Beats and see that they're a psych-rock band, it wouldn't be wrong to think "Ugh. Another one." because psych-rock has been done over and over again. But even though that may be the case, Night Beats do their own thing here. Their influences are obvious, lots of T. Rex, lots of 13th Floor Elevators, but they don't sound like cheap imitations of those bands, they do their own thing. It's not entirely unique, but it's done exceptionally well. Night Beats have a strong Texan psych-rock influence too, you can hear that in the somewhat Latin feel on some of the songs (most notably "Egypt Berry"). The songs have a lot of muscle, they power forward and never slow down, there's virtually no filler on this album, which is pretty impressive for a 12-track psych-rock album. It's a worthwhile listen. [First added to this chart: 02/19/2016]

The first thing I thought of when I heard this album was "Man does this sound a lot like Chance The Rapper", and it makes sense, considering one of the first places Noname got recognition was on Chance's Acid Rap. Noname takes a very similar approach to her music as Chance does, this is an album that's not trying to be anything other than what it is: honest. Noname isn't aiming for a Grammy or anything, she's just telling her story, telling us what ails her, using music as the catharsis it so often is. Noname feels burdened by what she sees, she's not talking about the poverty and death she's seen out of anger, she's talking about it out of empathy. She imagines a world in which she's solved poverty with a quick abracadabra, she discusses her aunt's fight with cancer, and her grandmother's tales of racial injustices. Throughout all of this, Noname weaves the production of this album through soul, gospel, and R&B seamlessly, and it makes for a unique and powerful album. [First added to this chart: 11/04/2016]

Where Burn Your Fire For No Witness signaled Angel Olsen's transition from a lo-fi musicians to one with a more fully produced sound, My Woman shows her fully embracing a powerful sound. Olsen's greatest strength is her songwriting, and this album is no different. Her lyrics are honest and powerful, dealing with issues such as failing relationships and her identity as a woman in music. Olsen is, without a doubt, one of the strongest songwriters around in popular music today, and that's on full display on My Woman. [First added to this chart: 12/06/2016]

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 1% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 93.3/100, a mean average of 95.4/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 96.5/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 7.8.

Comprehensive, detailed, varied. It boggles my mind how a single person can know a year so intimately. This is more than just an assembled list; each album has clearly been given due attention before its placement. There's just the right balance of familiar and obscure too, a surprise from someone whose overall chart has a fair bit of classic rock. This might as well be from a one-man music publication - I'll be sure to pay your charts more attention in future!

This is great, I love the fact that you rate acclaimed and famous albums and the unknown ones the same. I hope to learn from your charts since I've never heard about a bit portion of stuff here.

"This is an album that sounds like maybe it's at peace with itself" - probably because it's Richmond Fontaine final album? :F

There's a lot here for me to look into, and already a bit I disagree with. Seems like it could be particularly interesting how this shifts as the second half of the year comes through. Will be looking through this lots.

I was originally rating this so you could eventually rate my 2016 chart, but your comments once again show that I'm not worthy. Amazing job, Rocky, especially as your picks are just as extraordinary as what you write about them.
