RTJ 3 marks Run the Jewels out clearly as an established rap duo instead of an experiment between 2 MCs. On the album Killer Mike and El-P are more overtly political giving some of the most significant lines that either rapper has ever written. The production is also as good as in RTJ 2 ost of the time, but this album has a couple of drawbacks that didn't affect RTJ 2. So much emphasis is put on the chemistry of the duo that neither rapper ever has any very long verses which often provided the best songs on previous efforts like a christmas fucking miracle. The length of the album also leaves a middle section weaker than the rest of the album with 'Stay Gold' being the worst track, in which the fairly long hook is repeated so many times without any real effect. On the flip side, outside of this area every track is great. Opener 'Down' is the most relaxed of the tracks having a similar introductory effect to 'Jeopardy' on RTJ 2. This doesn't last long with short highlight 'Talk to Me' coming straight after and massively building the energy which lasts for the next few tracks. There's also some great tracks at the back of this album, '2100' perfectly mixes the fast rapping style, with conscious lyrics and has a great hook from Boots. Unexpected guest Kamasi Washington manages to blend his saxophone into 'Thursday in the Danger Room', one of the best tracks of the album where Run the Jewels move outside of their usual politics of agression and focus on friends they've known who've died too soon. Danny Brown and Zack Dela Rocha also provide great verses on their tracks. [First added to this chart: 03/28/2017]

Untitled Unmastered may may only be a collection of B sides, but the B sides of an album on the scale of To Pimp A Butterfly makes it one of the best hip hop releases of 2016. The opener gives us some of the most frantic rapping Kendrick has ever produced, with the intense rhythm and flow not really letting up until the outro. 'Untitled 02' is a lot more understated, but going for just as dark a vibe, which fantastically builds up to a lengthy and dense verse. This effect is repeated on 'Untitled 05' which only really features vocals by singer Anna Wise until about 2 minutes in where we get equally brilliant verses from Kendrick, Punch, and fellow Black Hippy member Jay Rock. Three part 'Untitled 07' starts with a really intense feel to it before feeling much spacier in its second part, before moving on to an overlong recording of a jam session in its third section. 'Untitled 06' is also a weaker moment on the album with a Cee Lo guest appearance feeling too light for the project, but Untitled Unmastered is a fourth consecutive solid release from Kendrick Lamar that builds further on the jazz influence of To Pimp A Butterfly.

Lemonade continues Beyonce's career trasformation started in 2013 and goes one better. Starting out the album is intensely personal, mainly focussing on her experience of being cheated on. Pairing perfectly with the visual album the first half of the record covers the sadness ('Pray You Catch Me'), anger ('Don't Hurt Yourself') and empowerment ('6 Inch') that this causes. Later on in the album these materialise into forgiveness. 'Sandcastles' gives the most raw Beyonce vocal performance to date, where she sounds most vulnerable at her loudest due to the cracks in here voice. 'Freedom' and 'All Night' close up the story of the album, the latter sampling the trumpets from Outkast's 'SpottieOttieDopaliscious' to build up the triumphant tone that these 2 tracks create. Closer 'Formation' ends the album on a less positive and more political note, expressing themes of black pride as a response to prominent acts of police brutality.
