Top 100 Music Albums of the 1960s by Junomoogmello

For me, the sixties was the birth of Psychedelia, music of the free and mind expanding and creative albums with amazing cover artwork dominated. Many of the albums below fit into the psychedelic genre and some cross it like the Yes album which sits between the sound of psychedelia and the birth of prog. Listen to the Colours of Your Mind by Dusty Springfield and even this crosses into that psychedelic arena. Psychedelia and prog are just labels, if you listen to an album which has the trademarks of a genre then you decide. Nobody is going to shoot you down for mis-describing something you like, the main thing is that you enjoy the music. In my listing of the albums below, I have categorised how I feel the album sits, mainly as a guide for fellow music lovers, if you disagree, that is fine.

Jazz/Psychedelia. I detest the cover sleeve of this album but the music makes up for that. One of Zappa's more accessible works. [First added to this chart: 08/01/2018]

Psychedelic- I have cheated including this here really as it is a 2017 compilation of their early sixties output. It is so sixties and psychedelic it just didn't feel right putting in a 2010 chart. Sorry BEA's [First added to this chart: 06/25/2020]

Psychedelic. An album of two parts. Using the vinyl LP to reference, the first two sides are epic psychedelic Floyd with standout tracks being Careful With That Axe Eugene, A Saucerful of Secrets and Set the Controls For the Heart of The Sun. The other two sides don't do it for me, bordering on utter tripe in the case of Roger Waters solo piece. So in summary, worth owning for the first two sides. [First added to this chart: 06/14/2020]

Albums like this are overshadowed by the more well known artists of the era as is often the case with lesser known bands. There is some great music on here, rock with attitude and a with psychedelic tinge to some tracks. Born to be Wild and The Pusher steal the show. [First added to this chart: 08/05/2021]

This album is a very different affair compared to 1967's 'Goodbye and Hello'. I prefer the former but don't dislike Happy Sad, the vocal Is delivered like an instrument, it climbs and falls with crescendos and decrescendos all underpinned by acoustic guitar, electric piano and xylophone. The ten minute long third track (title too long to type!) is my favourite with the double bass and electric guitar flourishes. The album is a mixture of folk and jazz with happy and sad undertones so the album does live up to its name. [First added to this chart: 08/07/2021]

There are some great psychedelic tracks on this album but What's Become of the Baby is a challenging listen, noted by some to be The Dead's Revolution 9. This an Anthem of the Sun were Grateful Dead at their psychedelic peak. Mountains of the Moon is a personal favourite. [First added to this chart: 04/03/2022]

Psychedelic- This album doesn't have the familiar Vox Continental sound throughout, introducing some very early synth sounds to the affair. In parts strange as the title would suggest. Took me a couple of listens to digest. [First added to this chart: 08/05/2021]
