The Charlatans: Between 1st and 7th by Foxforce5

Nobody else came out of the Madchester scene with such an excellent body of work as the Charlatans. The mystery is why they are so often overlooked. Here are their best bits…

Not as beloved by the band as others, but a belting and consistently high quality follow up to Some Friendly. The staccato nature of lead single Weirdo was hard to digest at the time, but sounds brilliant and even a little dangerous today. [First added to this chart: 03/13/2024]

A manifesto of brilliance straight out of the traps, the debut hits the heights with The Only One I Know and Sproston Green, a set closer to this day. The Madchester sound is in full effect and Rob Collins Hammond organ adds a bonus layer to the brilliance. [First added to this chart: 03/13/2024]

The last great Charlatans album. Up To Our Hips itself grinds, swirls and stalks, whilst I Never Want An Easy Life features off kilter harmonies. Their best album cover by some distance shows an assured band who seem comfortable in their own skin.

Although good albums follow, I can’t help thinking ‘if only Rob Collins…’

Understandably patchy due to Collins death during recording, it nonetheless represents a return to form after the previous album. One to Another is arguably as good as anything they’ve done whilst the energy of How High sounds like the Sex Pistols suddenly blessed with optimism. [First added to this chart: 03/14/2024]

The Charlatans close the century with bit more Dylan added to the mix this. The album’s feel is looser and it stretches and sprawls a touch. Solid. [First added to this chart: 03/16/2024]

Wonderland frustrates a little. A couple of quality tracks build some momentum and then a weaker track lets it slide a touch.

This would be a new direction if the Rolling Stones had never existed. It definitely sounds cohesive, and there are moments, but the overall sound is copied homework. [First added to this chart: 03/13/2024]
