Recently Departed: 2024 by Moondance
It's 2024 & I continue my series of 'Recently Departed' charts.
These charts give me a final opportunity to recognise & thank those singers, musicians and bands that have graced my life over the past 60+ years.
Those artists that I regard most highly will fill the top spots of the chart; thereafter, the chart will be ordered chronologically based on the date of the artist's passing.
Like the previous charts in this series, I wonder whether 100 places is enough - as our musical heroes inevitably get older.

B: 29 November 1933/d: 22 July 2024 - age 90
John has been making his mark for the past 60 years - with the Bluebreakers & as a solo artist. His discography lists 35 studio albums & 34 live albums released between 1965 - 2022. Eric Clapton, John McVie, Peter Green, Mick Taylor were members of his various early band iterations.
In 2024, John was finally inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.
I have John's 'Empty Rooms' album listed in my top 100 albums of all time. Released in 1970 it seemed to have resonated within Australia more than anywhere else in the world - reaching no.6 on the charts. The song 'Plan Your Revolution' was a calling cry for me & my high school friends - especially as we began to question the ingrained societal norms of the day. For some reason, I took a deeper interest in the album & discovered a beauty in songs like: Don't Pick A Flower; Thinking Of My Woman; Waiting For The Right Time; Counting The Days. It was an album I found myself returning to over the years and it has become a comfort to have it near.
So, the loss of John has hit me hard - especially following the loss of Jon Mark (guitarist & co-writer of several Empty Rooms songs) in 2021. [First added to this chart: 07/27/2024]

Melanie made a big impact internationally in the early 70's. Her 'Candles In The Rain' album reached no.2 in the Australian charts (& top 10 elsewhere) and I had a well worn copy of the LP. For that period of time in modern music and in my own discovery of modern music, she will always hold a special place for me.
Melanie released almost 30 albums between 1968 to 2010, but she never re-captured the 'magic' of her '68 - '72 period. [First added to this chart: 02/04/2024]
