Top 100 Music Albums of the 1990s by mrmcrook

The 90's was a fascinating decade. Grunge dominated the mainstream and became an added genre for those of us who mainly loved Metal and music of the heavier nature.

My list used to have a lot of compilations. There's still some in there but I'm trying to ween them out.

Any footnotes are just personal ramblings for my own entertainment.
And to remind me of the joy the music brings before all memory is erased.

I'd never even heard of these guys prior to coming onto this site. Being rated so high I gave it a listen on Spotify, thought it was alright and managed to track myself down a copy. It took a few listens before it fully clicked with me as I initially found the vocals a tad grating. Now I find it very addictive and have it on high rotation.
The sequencing and seguing from one song to the next is total perfection. An absolute true gem of an album.

You know what you're getting with Monster Magnet. Solid stoner rock/metal and consistency right throughout the album. I have found with this one however, it's hasn't kept the mind blowingness it gave me in the past. Don't get me wrong, still a fucking fantastic album, just not holding the test of time like a lot of their other albums [First added to this chart: 10/21/2020]

I know they're covers, but by god they're brilliant. Some way better than the originals, some not so but overall, this is a fantastic album. [First added to this chart: 10/21/2020]

Shit hot debut. Where the building blocks were being laid to establish the sound and style that make them completely unique. I always seem to have a misconception with this album, thinking it's not as good as it is, due to all their other albums being greater. Even though it's the runt of the litter within their catalog, this is a fucking fantastic album [First added to this chart: 10/21/2020]

The album that brought Electronic/Dance music to the masses. Even though massively commercial, you can't knock it as it's loaded with catchy tunes and rhythms. Where he established himself as one of the kings of electronic beats. Even if Dance/Electronica isn't your jam, you can't help but love this. [First added to this chart: 10/21/2020]

Fantastic original sound. Bit of a metal/alternative hybrid. Packed with great rhythms and no filler. Solid right through. Best album they made under the name HLAH or Head Like A Hole [First added to this chart: 10/21/2020]

Great. Proper Metal. Horror themed Metal with industrial flurries but still decent Metal. A nice touch is that it's broken up with short different toned interludes that add some variety and help it from all blending into one. It does dip in the back end though. You can hear the crossover on this. There's still a lot of residue of Kyuss. It's not til the next album that they found their own sound. In regards to where this album is placed; this is better than any Kyuss album. There are quite a few QOTSA albums that are better than this. Just my opinion, that's all. I agree with a lot of what you say. The value of compilations, how good Dopes To Infinty is (even if it is not in my decade chart t hods a respectable position in my yearly chart), and I had the same experience with NMH including first hearing of them through BEA....and I need to get around to a Headless Chickens album - heard a lot of their songs over the years and Gaskrankenstation is an all time favourite

This is a unique and very interesting chart. While I haven't included many compilations or live albums on my own charts, your rationale for doing so makes sense. Lots of stuff here I've never heard before, so I'm looking forward to sampling some of your selections that are less familiar to me, starting with your #1 pick.
